The Adirondack Atrium 2 was designed for our client who wanted
to watch the sun rise over their lovely pond to the northeast. The wonderful
breakfast sunroom off of the kitchen will also allow for some sunset views
in mid summer. Like many of our other atrium plans, the house is designed
to sit at a 45 degree angle to the sun with two sunny, south sides and
the accompanying two south views. This house was reversed to place the
front and garage doors on the southwest.
First Floor
The clerestory atrium brings sunshine down into the central staircase.
The main living area has views to the southeast and southwest, and opens
to the west front porch perfect for sunset viewing in winter. The kitchen
is centrally located and features two breakfast bars and a sunny window
box. The away room can be used for an office, TV viewing, or a second
bedroom. The master bedroom is on the cooler, quieter, north side. The
central hallway features glass block, mail nook, and space for boots and
coats near the two family entries.
Second Floor
The spacious second floor is full of delightful spaces starting with
the atrium and overlook of the great room. The variety of vaulted ceilings
and nooks creates character. The walk in attic storage above the garage
is convenient.
Basement
The basement has its own stairs from the garage making it perfect for
the mechanical equipment and a workshop. Garage The extra large garage
can accommodate three vehicles and it has extra storage space around the
sides.
Construction Info
The first floor ceilings are 9' while part of the great room and upstairs
are vaulted. The basement is 8' with suggested ICF construction. The first
and second floors walls are 6" studs and the roof is designed to be stick-framed.
The partial slab foundation adds thermal mass to the house which aids
in comfort and reduces the chance of winter overheating. Passive solar
performance is sacrificed with angled plans and because of the potential
for overheating with errors in siting, you must carefully follow our custom
energy recommendations for your climate. (See our book or web site regarding
angled plans.)
Modification Ideas
Since changes may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should be done with professional assistance.
- Make the garage smaller and step it down from the main roof for simpler
construction
- Add a northeast shed dormer for another bedroom upstairs
- Replace the fireplace with a TV entertainment center
-Add stairs to the basement underneath the stairs up
