The Atrium Breeze 2 home features the same sunny atrium, vaulted first
floor, and two south sides as our Atrium Breeze plan, but the entry is
through the front courtyard on the northeast. With the garage turned and
the doors on the northwest, the house is not quite as wide. Our client
also wanted the area connecting the main house to be expanded along with
the screened porch which now has its season of use expanded with the added
fireplace.
First Floor
The front entry courtyard welcomes the visitor as they approach both
the main front entry and the side friend's front door into the mud room.
The frequently used southwest porch and deck have been enlarged and the
seldom used front porch is just enough to welcome guests. The near by
optional elevator, makes for easy access to the basement. A friend's entry
porch allows visitors to leave their coats & shoes in the family mud room
when desired. The master bedroom and bath are still large and the laundry
is conveniently located adjacent to the master bath leaving the basement
one for the kids and guests.
Loft
The quaint loft with guardrails and a gate above the stairs can be fun
for kids or used as overflow first floor storage.
Daylight Basement
This plan comes with a full daylight basement plan. If your land slopes
to the south, the light into the bedrooms and entertainment room would
make these spaces bright so long as you do not add a deck above them on
the south side. The three bedrooms, full bath, kitchenette, laundry, and
entertainment room make this level a private retreat for kids at home
or returning for the holidays. The optional elevator allows your aging
parents to live with you in sunny privacy.
Garage
The garage can now hold 3 vehicles with the doors on the northwest side.
The greenhouse area is still a feature, but this space would also make
a wonderful workshop.
Construction Info
The entire kitchen, master bedroom, and front bedroom all still have
the same vaulted ceilings as the great room, dining, and corner sunroom
of the Atrium Breeze. The other first floor rooms still have 9' ceilings
and the basement 10' ceilings. The roof slope is still lower and the thermal
mass walls around the corner sunroom remain. They can be covered in tile,
stone, or stucco to assist with thermal comfort in winter.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- Move the laundry to the half bath location and make a full bath where
the laundry is to be close to the front bedroom
- Give up a little closet space and have direct access to the laundry
from the main living areas - Add a skylight to brighten your way down
the stairs
- Make the finished basement smaller by finishing only the south side
rooms.
- For more thermal mass, build on a concrete slab. You can then eliminate
the interior mass walls.
