A home with a tiny footprint that steps gently on the earth sums up our Chattahoochee home for nature lovers. It can be nestled amongst
the forest in the mountains as well as landscaping on a small lot. It
has the comfortable appeal of a traditional exterior with an innovative
and open interior. Decks, porches, and patios wrap this north-facing home
for many options for outdoor living areas.
First Floor
From both the front visitor entry and side family entry, there are diagonal
views to the large hearth and the large west porch. There are also views
through to the kitchen window box. Rounding the corner you find the French
doors leading to the south deck. The master bedroom is on the most private
corner of the house. Practicality comes in to play as the master bath
is designed to have part shared by visitors and a direct access to the
wide family entry for coats, boots, backpacks, and purses. The numerous
outdoor spaces makes this home a wonderful weekend retreat for large family
gatherings or quiet daily living. The hot tub on the southwest corner
will surely be a favorite relaxing spot year-round.
Second Floor
As soon as you reach the top of the stairs, you see the delight in the
second floor with the westward view and overlook to the hearth and great
room. The large loft has two nooks for overnight guests as well as one
extra large bedroom and one small quaint bedroom that might also be a
study or craft room. The vaulted ceilings add character to the upstairs
and the numerous small windows let in light in just the right places.
Optional Garage
The detached garage allows for windows on all sides of the home. The
extra large garage can accommodate at least two vehicles, and a workshop,
space for small vehicles, or greenhouse.
Construction Info
The first floor ceilings are 8' except where vaulted such as the south
side of the master bedroom and kitchen, and the story and a half great
room. The walls are 6" like many of our plans, but the custom energy recommendations
discuss other energy-efficient options to consider. The roof is designed
to be stick-framed and some of collar ties are recommended to be left
exposed which with the few exposed beams will make the interior feel slightly
rustic. Thermal mass to help retain the solar heat is in the slab on grade
floors and there is also some mass in the large stone-faced hearth and
entertainment cabinet wall.
Modification Ideas
Since changes may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should be done with professional assistance.
- Attach the garage to the east where direct access is desired if you
don't mind losing the windows to the bathroom
- Floor in the area above the great room to add another bedroom.
- Eliminate the south dormer and bedroom for more roof for PV
- Place the 2nd floor ceiling at 8' creating either attic storage or
a long quaint sleeping area above (there's a window at one end)

Thanks to Tom and Beth for allowing us to visit their mountain home
in the Chattahoochee Forest and take the photos. We visited in August
and could see that the home without the air conditioning turned on was
quite comfortable inside! Note the shade line on the south windows. The
home feels much larger than it is with the abundance of windows, open
great room, and creative, fun second floor.
