The Four Seasons 6 is a variation of our Four Seasons 2, but with a slightly larger second floor and as many as 6 bedrooms. It is great for the large family. The front of the house should face south. This is one of our best performing passive solar homes with the abundance of south glass.
First Floor
The center of the home is the open dining surrounded by the open kitchen to the east and the great room to the west. The brick (or stone) wall with open arches separates the front entry from the dining yet also serves as thermal mass and a major design feature of the home. The family foyer in the center is a collections area for coats and boots as well as mail. There is even a small desk for a computer. It is near the back yard/future garage entry and the, center stair to basement garage. Two screened porches create two locations for dining - a west one for sunset viewing and the back north one for hot summers. A full bath and bedroom downstairs can also serve as a den or bedroom. The first floor is wheelchair accessible if any of the doors can be built at grade.
Second Floor
The master bedroom is upstairs with a small bath so there is no need to share with the kids. It is small yet functional and boasts a large closet. The many children's bedrooms all have large closets too. This house is for children who spend more time outdoors and with the family rather than in their rooms.
Basement Option
The basement has a laundry with a chute to the upper floors. The outside basement door to the south will assure the clothes have a sunny place to dry or you can hang them in the garage! Construction Info The entire second floor has exterior walls that slope from 8' to 10' in the center. The first floor has 9' ceilings. The brick walls on both floors eliminate the need for excessive thermal mass in the floors although thermal mass is still designed into the entire family room floor.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity, they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- This floor plan could still be constructed with the front facing north and a full front porch like in the original Four Seasons. The main entry would then be into the family foyer.
- Turn the basement garage into a play room for the kids! Add a bath where the laundry is and move the laundry up to the second floor near the bedrooms

Our clients have sent us this link which shows their house under construction and the following note from January:
Dear Debbie,
Just a quick note to tell you that the drywallers are complaining that it is too hot in the house (its about 10 degrees outside). "That solar thing must really work" said one. :-)
