The Half Moon 3 evolved from our west facing Half Moon 2 with the spacious living area. The exterior walls are now ICF (insulated concrete forms) and the attached garage buffers part of the north side of the house. The concrete slab foundation makes for a very economical way to add thermal mass.
First Floor
The main living areas including the master bedroom on the south side of the house are vaulted. Without the central stairs, there is room for a small study that would also meet a minimum bedroom size if it was enclosed. Enclose the south dining later on and you have a three bedroom, one story home. The northwestern screened porch will be a pleasant summer sunset viewing area. The warmer, south deck will be a warm spot from which to watch the winter sun set. All of the south rooms have gorgeous views south. A fireplace has been added to the master bedroom, but being close to the laundry, the room is still practical. The small double doors to the bath still allow some east light to brighten the bedroom when the double doors are open.
Garage
The attached two-car garage plus a shop area is designed to be located on the north with the doors also on the north. There is plenty of space for endless tools and equipment, On narrow lots, the garage doors could be west-facing.
Construction Info
The Half Moon 3 is designed to be constructed with a trussed roof and ICF walls. The north half of the first floor has 8' ceilings while the south rooms slope from 8' up to around 13' in the center. The north rooms have attic storage area above. The floors on the south side over the concrete slab can be tile or even be heavy stone since the slab can support higher loads than a wood framed floor over a basement or crawlspace. The beautiful thermal mass finishes including concrete stains are endless.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity, they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- Create two small bedrooms on the south in the middle
- Re-design the master bath to allow for a soaking tub and numerous other luxuries
- Add stone to the foundation, stucco to the first floor walls, and tiles to the roof for a new look
