The Islander is a simple, but very functional home with the front designed
to face north. It works best for sites with views to the west (east if
reversed) or south. The exterior is brick, but with the hip roofs on the east
and west, all walls will be protected.
First Floor
The east side of the home houses the bedrooms and the master
suite will receive the morning sun as well as light from the south throughout
the day. It is close to the other bedrooms yet separated with baths and closets
for acoustical privacy. French doors from the dining area open to a covered
porch on the west. The kitchen also has a great view to the west. The large
island in the middle can house a separate range top. The large peninsula area
can serve equally well for a quick meal as well as additional counter space.
The large pantry eliminates the need for an abundance of cabinets. The front
foyer is designed to be open with both a peak to the stairs that lead down and
a view through to the sunny south side of the house.
Daylight Basement
The house comes with the basement, but with our custom services we can
create a new foundation plan.
Garage
The garage is attached and can be entered from any of the three sides. It is
separated from the main house by a mudroom with laundry and a half bath.
Construction Info
The roof is designed to be constructed with trusses which allows for a very
open first floor. The entire kitchen, dining, and great room are designed to be
open with vaulted ceilings, but they could also have the 9' ceilings like the
rest of the home. The home is a sun-tempered home that requires no additional
interior mass to maintain interior comfort. With the south glass increased and
thermal mass added in the walls or floors, it could also become a full passive
solar home.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- The stairs down to the basement can be reversed to make the basement
accessible from the foyer.
- The exterior could also be cement board siding with a metal roof, or stucco
with a tile roof.
- For one story plans, the stairs can be replaced with a small computer nook
or if the garage was detached, the stair area would make an ideal place for a
laundry room.
- Add a full front porch to the front for a cool summer place to sit.
