A northwest facing lot with a gorgeous view to the southeast inspired
the Lakeside Sunrise which evolved from our Fairy Tale design.
The main entry was moved to another side to create a large, welcoming
foyer. The center of the home features a two story atrium and large hearth.
The southwest sunroom-like corner brightens the living areas year-round
and allows sunset viewing. The craftsman-style exterior overhangs minimize
summer overheating. The wrap around porch on the northeast corner is the
place to be to watch the lakeside sunrises.
First Floor
Through the timber-framed arch at the end of the foyer, the south-facing
kitchen, dining, and living areas are entered. The large south windows,
French doors, cozy hearth, and open atrium create spaces that are hard
to leave. The guest bath is easy to reach while the master bath is privately
tucked away. A mudroom (that could also be the laundry) near the garage
entry keeps messy gear outside the house.
Second Floor
The open stairs with light streaming down lead to the best view in the
house. It overlooks the dining, has a large view to the south, and a glimpse
of the many upstairs nooks. The central atrium also lets out hot summer
air to increase the passive cooling season. Bedrooms have a window that
opens to the atrium to aid in air circulation and to let in more light.
Daylight Basement
While the full basement has endless possibilities, a small workshop and
corner southwest sunroom are shown. Large windows and French doors open
to the view side.
Attached Garage
The deeper than average two-vehicle garage accommodates a workshop area
with a sink. Keeping it lower than the main house allows the front porch
gable to dominate the front elevation. The garage doors could be moved
to the side.
Construction Info
The main house exterior walls are ICF (insulated concrete forms). The
main level floors are ICF too with rigid insulation, integral steel joists,
and concrete on top. The basement and first floor ceilings are 9' high
except for the central area above the dining. Upstairs ceilings are vaulted
SIP panels which take maximum advantage of space beneath the roof. The
garage and porches have truss framed roofs. The abundance of concrete
and panels makes this a strong, high mass home.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance. - Simplify
the home by taking off the sunroom
- Rotate the long wall to due south and reduce the west glass - Modify
the main house construction type to either SIPs or stick-framed walls
and ceilings
- Move the laundry to the basement (or second floor), slide down the
? bath and make a large pantry near the kitchen
- Turn the laundry near the front into a small office or study
