The Moon Dance 2 plan is a siding and stone version of our popular
brick Moon Dance plan. The total square footage is about the same, but
the first floor is larger and the second floor smaller. The Moon Dance
2 has a side sunroom that can be used year round and functions as a screened
porch when all of the windows are open. It still has wonderful south views
with enough northwest glass for views in that direction as well. The attached
garage and spacious connecting area functions as an elegant, but practical,
mud room or family entry in the back.
First Floor
The first floor is wheelchair friendly, but in a practical way that does
not make the wider doors and halls look institutional. Practical features
include the laundry near both the center of the home and the master bedroom,
the pantry that can be accessed from the kitchen and family entry, and
the central desk or computer nook. The large stone veneer hearth and surrounding
walls is the feature of the great room with vaulted ceilings. Just beyond
the cozy breakfast area is the four season room with views in three directions.
The small west porch shades the sunroom's west glass and creates a fantastic
sunset viewing spot both winter and summer.
Second Floor
The entire upstairs is vaulted with bedroom 2 having a study nook that
overlooks the kitchen, breakfast, and great room. The bedrooms are spacious
and the ample walk-in attic to the north will make accessing holiday decorations
a pleasure.
Daylight Basement
The daylight basement has a large entertainment room on the south side
and exercise space that could become a fourth bedroom. The basement bath
and walk out patio to the west allow this space to also be a great in-law
suite.
Garage
For convenience especially in cold climates, the garage is attached on
the north side of the home without affecting the solar gain. It is designed
to house 2 vehicles and with room for a workshop on the west end. Double
doors on the north would allow access to the northwest corner.
Construction Info
The Moon Dance 2 is designed for stick framed construction and an ICF
(insulated concrete form) foundation, but it could be modified for SIP's
by your local design professional. The first floor and basement have 9'
ceilings. To add some thermal mass to the home, there are a few interior
stone walls.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- Make the sunroom the entry and the front of the house could be on
the west. The dining could then be converted into a study.
- For a little more second floor space, floor in the open space over
the western end of the house.
