The front of the Sun Dance 3 faces south, but the square footage
is a little less. The south entry with its craftsman style roof opens
into an elegant foyer surrounded by a stone wall and stairs up and down.
First Floor
The extra large great room has a fireplace nook at one end. With all
of the sun that will enter this home from the south, the rooms with their
8' ceilings will still feel spacious. Upstairs the ceilings are vaulted
and there is walk-in storage over the great room and dining area. The
dining area has views to the west that are shaded by the large west porch.
The north part of this back wrap-a-round porch opens to the more practical
side of the home and would be great for storing wood. The master suite
is accessible from the foyer making it private yet when the double doors
are open you will get a glimpse of the master bedroom fireplace. The laundry
area is near the back entry yet you need not walk through coming and going.
There is a small desk nook for a computer and mail center.
Second Floor
Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bath and a large walk-in attic storage
area. Like our other Sun Dance plans, the ceilings are vaulted. Daylight
Basement The basement foundation is designed for 6" of stone on the exterior.
The stone is designed to be flush with the wood framed walls above. We
can also custom design a conventional basement plan, crawl space plan,
or slab on grade plan. The basement has a game room large enough for a
pool table and a fireplace of its own as well as a bath and lots of storage.
Garage Option
The back porch on the northeast links the house to the parking area and
optional detached garage.
Construction Info
The thermal mass that is necessary for indoor comfort in our full passive
solar version of the Sun Dance has been placed on the walls instead of
the floor making this home more economical to build. The home is designed
for the mass to be stone, but brick could be substituted.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
Attach the garage to the house on the north side
Move the main entry to the west porch

We thank Anthony and Terry in their moderate climate zone for sharing
the photos on the photo page . Their stone mason skills
added both character and thermal mass to the home.
Smaller Photos were sent to us by the Energy Star builder,
Scott, of UP-TYTE Construction, another Sun Dance 3 in Missouri. He modified
the exterior walls in the field for ICF construction for the Christy's.
"....it was very easy to adjust for the ICF's, we just had to allow
for a thicker wall, we used a 11"form for the Christy's home with 6" of
concrete inside the forms. I'm not sure what brand of foam was sprayed
in the home but the installer has just started using Icenyne brand and
that is what we will use on the next project. As for the colored blocks,
they all start as white but we painted some to look like legos and then
stacked them up for our display at our local Home Builder's Show last
February so that they would catch attention and then the customer could
more easily understand how they are assembled." Here is his web
