The Water Music home was designed for a wooded site with a lake
to the north, for clients who like to dance. With the house designed
with the front to face south, you enter the home into a sun room foyer.
The angled walls welcome you further. From the kitchen, living, and
dining as well as study nook, you have an expansive view to the north.
The corner east and west windows in the main living area expand your
views.
First Floor
On the northwest corner, the master suite has a north view. The doors
to the master bath from the foyer and to the master bedroom from the
study nook allow for good air circulation as well as convenience. The
east family entry is close to the outside and kitchen making this house
dog and kid friendly. The screened porch on the coolest corner of the
house enhances summer relaxing.
Second Floor
The large open space is big enough for dancing! A north sitting area
overlooks the lake to the north. A glance over the railing views the
main living space below. High on the end walls are windows to aid in
cooling. The winter sun will awaken you in the south bedroom and the
window seat will be a cozy place to soak up the sun. The bath is designed
to be shared by future upstairs bedrooms.
Carport and Garage Option
The optional two-vehicle carport/storage is shown located to the southeast
of the house so that the family will enter near the pantry. The carport
makes a convenient area for drying clothes or a cookout.
Construction Info
The house is designed for 2x4 walls with additional rigid insulation.
The main roof is rafter-framed allowing the upstairs ceilings to be
sloped with the main center ceiling at 10 high. This allows the space
for a large walk-in attic or future second bedroom to the east on the
second floor. The first floor is wheelchair-friendly with 3 doors in
many places.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- Construct the home with 6 walls, SIP panels, or ICFs
- Delete some north windows to reduce heat loss
- Add two more bedrooms upstairs by enclosing one on the north and
one on the east
- Add a fireplace or wood stove to the great room
- Frame the side portions with truss roofs
- Turn the screened porch into another first floor bedroom and modify
the laundry/pantry to add a shower to the half bath
- Modify the house for full ADA handicap accessibility
