Water Music 5

The Water Music 5 home is a simplified, smaller version of the elegant Water Music designs but with the same unique sunroom foyer that stretches across the southern front of the home.  The simple roof line and symmetry of the home add a comforting, traditional feel while the abundance of windows illustrate how bright the home will be inside. With three bedrooms and two baths on the main floor, it is a great home to both raise a family and age in place. The open great room, dining and kitchen with angular cabinet placement and expanse of north glass for views of nature make this of the most creative designs from Sun Plans.

First Floor

From the front door centered on the home, the visitor gets a peak at the open great room beyond through the large central archway. Passing through the left side arch, the main part of the home is entered. Passage through the right side arch leads up the elegant stairs to the expansive attic which can become future bedrooms.

The large kitchen has a kitchen sink area that connects to a large breakfast bar that can be counter height or lowered to table height. Some may find that the separate dining area is not needed which frees up the northwest corner for a study or reading nook. There are pantries on both sides of the kitchen and a coat closet nearby that could also house additional kitchen items for the gourmet cook. The south side of the kitchen captures light from the bright foyer.

The central living area is flanked by bedrooms on both sides. On the right is the master suite with its eastern sun nook for yoga or exercise. The nearby expansive closet and spacious master bath feature bright southern windows while the bedroom remains cooler on the north side. The north porch off the dining area will be a pleasant get-a-way on summer mornings to catch the sunrise or summer evenings to catch a cool breeze.

Bedrooms two and three are on the western, more public side of the home. They maintain privacy being split by a small hall yet share a bathroom with guests. The small front bedroom will feel larger with its southern windows. The northern bedroom has soft north light perfect for a craft room or study.

The west family entry leads through a coat storage area then through the laundry room to the screened porch which opens to a small and bright southwest porch perfect for winter sun basking. The mechanical / storage room to the north is convenient to the side door and can house a variety of equipment.

Optional Detached Garage

The two-vehicle carport is shown located to the northwest close to the mudroom, but could be located just about anywhere. It can easily be replaced with a small carport or larger garage.

Construction Info

The house is designed for 6 inch walls with a variety of types of insulation both in the wall and out to achieve a wide range of R-values. The ceilings are 9 foot throughout and the roof is framed with attic style trusses. The foundation is a slab on grade for integral thermal mass. Stone covers the sunroom/foyer walls and the sunroom floors.

Modification Ideas

Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity, they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.

  • Vault some of the ceilings if attic storage not needed
  • Add 2 bedrooms upstairs between attic style trusses
  • Add French doors in the dining to a northern patio or deck
  • For a narrower house, remove the side porch and mechanical
  • Connect the garage with a breezeway to the porch
