The Islander 2 is based on our Islander house plan. And also has
the front designed to face north. The changes include 3' wide doors throughout
for wheelchair access, lower 8' ceilings, slightly more south glass, some
interior wall mass, and an expanded laundry area. Take a close look at
the plans for other minor changes.
First Floor
The east side of the home houses the bedrooms and the master suite will
receive the morning sun as well as light from the south throughout the
day. It is close to the other bedrooms yet separated with baths and closets
for acoustical privacy. French doors from the dining area open to a covered
porch on the west. The kitchen also has a great view to the west. The
large island in the middle can house a separate range top. The large peninsula
area can serve equally well for a quick meal as well as additional counter
space. The large pantry eliminates the need for an abundance of cabinets.
The front foyer has a bench and coat storage.
Daylight Basement
The house comes with the basement, but with our custom services we can
create a new foundation plan. The basement is accessible from the kitchen
area and has a large root cellar. Garage The garage is attached and can
be entered from any of the three sides. It is separated from the main
house by a mudroom with laundry and a half bath. To make access from a
wheelchair easier, the house has been lowered and there are no steps from
the garage or from the front porch.
Construction Info
The roof is designed to be constructed with trusses which allows for
a very open first floor. The entire kitchen, dining, and great room are
designed to be open. The home has some interior mass to help maintain
interior comfort.
Modification Ideas
Since these ideas may affect energy performance and structural integrity,
they should only be undertaken with professional assistance.
- The stairs down to the basement can be reversed to make the basement
accessible from the foyer.
- The exterior could also be cement board siding with a metal roof,
or stucco with a tile roof.
- For one story plans, the stairs can be eliminated - Add a full front
porch to the north side for a cool summer place to sit.
- Increase the ceiling height to 9' or vault some areas with scissors
trusses for higher ceilings.

Karen and Bob sent the photos
of a reversed Islander 2. Bob made the interesting craftsman style gable
and porch himself including using the deadfall mountain laurels for the
railing infill. While reversing the plan was a service they ordered from
us, "field" changes that they made to the blueprints during
construction included such things as changing the brick siding to cement
board and the shingle roofing to metal. (Verify with your builder and
building inspection department if "field" changes are acceptable.)
